Vivant Professores!
Apa kabar? My name's Hening. I am a language teacher with over 10 years of experience teaching Indonesian and English for foreign speakers. My career as a teacher has taken me to the United States and Australia on scholarship and grant-based opportunities.
Now I teach English for Academic Purposes at the University of Indonesia and English for Specific Purposes at a government institution and a private company. I co-authored a paper presented at the 26th Linguistic Symposium in University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Our paper/presentation (whose abstract can be read on the symposium website) is titled Shifting Language Preference in Indonesian Metropolitan Areas and touches on the irony of shifting pride from using a national language to using a foreign language.
For some family reasons I am moving to the United States in 2012. That does not mean starting my career all over again. ESL in the U.S. looks like a promising field to me. My future plans there include getting another master's degree, which will likely be in Educational Psychology, or continuing to postgraduate level in Second Language Acquisition. As I have experiences in voluntary teaching and enjoyed it, I have become more interested in doing voluntary works in third world countries, especially in Central Asia, East Africa and South America.
Beside teaching, I love taking nature photographs. My fondness for photography goes hand in hand with my passions for travelling and travel blogging. I travelled in Spain, France, Portugal, Malaysia, Australia and Singapore. But above all, my biggest experience was travelling in North America --Canada, 35 states in the U.S. including Alaska, and Mexico-- during most of which I was backpacking alone and using frugal means of transportation and accomodations, which were a lot of fun because I met backpackers from all over the world and learnt about lives in other countries at the grass-root level.
The purpose of this site is to provide information about myself and hiring me as a teacher. The CV page lists my assorted work experience related to language studies. If you wish to read a brief version of my work experience, you can download my resume below.
I hope you enjoy your visit!
